Sponsored by the British Library and the University of Kentucky, the fifth edition is a major update and revision with a new look and advanced features. The top menu contains two new buttons labeled Discovery and GUIDE. The editor urges readers to consult the new GUIDE to understand the full range of features in Beowulf and throughout Cotton Vitellius A. xv. The editor has rewritten the former Help facility, adding or replacing over 350 illustrations to bring it up to date with the new edition. Inside the GUIDE, clicking the three-line hamburger icon (☰) in the top right opens its expansive menus and submenus. The new interface allows readers to move easily around and explore all features. If you open the GUIDE first, you can quickly open the edition on its first page by clicking the fiery dragon heads in the upper left.

Back in the edition, the Discovery button in the top menu releases a sub-menu of six ways to access detailed information. This feature allows all levels of readers, from curious beginners to advanced scholars, to customize the program to suit their specific needs. The Discovery feature provides quick access to its Critical Edition, Definition, Grammar, Translation, Glossary, and Meter. By including proper names, the full Glossary encourages readers to assess the credibility of some controversial name changes in recent editions. As always, the File button accesses all parts of Cotton Vitellius A. xv and the Supplementary Works. The top menu highlights the GUIDE, the comprehensive explanation of all features of the fifth edition.

Previous editions restricted the Translation to line-by-line superscripts, which remain valuable for quick reference or for readers wishing to learn Old English using Beowulf. The Views button in the top menu still allows readers to compare side-by-side combinations of Edition, Manuscript, Transcript, Thorkelin A (Matthews), Thorkelin B, and 19th-century collations by Conybeare and Madden, but now allows readers with no knowledge of Old English to use the revised Translation in parallel with the edition and the manuscript. To move in parallel, Edition must be left, Translation right.

The fifth edition has greatly improved the Transcript Search. Programming in previous editions was based on automated encoding of usually non-lexical scribal spacing, rather than lexical word divisions. Search results were accordingly only fragmentary at best. The editor has manually encoded the Transcript for lexical meaning, while retaining scribal spacing, making it possible to find entire Old English words regardless of spacing, line division, and changes of folio.

While silently incorporating some of its results, the recent editors of Klaeber 4 never cite Electronic Beowulf because previous editions used an experimental lineation to highlight discrepancies in the meter. To facilitate comparison with print editions, the fifth edition now follows the traditional line numbering and discusses the reasons for doubting its inviolability in the notes. As should be true of all translations and editions of ancient texts, the Translation and Edition of the Beowulf manuscript are subject to continual revision.

The editor has processed all images in the composite codex Cotton Vitellius A. xv to remove discoloration from the original digitization. The Houghton Library at Harvard has generously provided for this edition new high-resolution images of Frederic Madden's 1824 collation of Thorkelin's 1815 first edition with the manuscript. Ellen Guinnip did the artwork for the new Splash and designed the interface of the GUIDE.
